The Bharatiya Janata Party has directed every government and private engineering colleges to send 100 students each on April 14 at Mhow, Indore to commemorate 125th birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar.
The colleges have been directed to ensure that there should be the presence of students and teachers in the Modi's rally. However, the directive has left some colleges in trouble because exams will be there at that time. The order was issued by the Assistant Commissioner (tribal welfare) on April 7 and she told The Indian Express that the students will take the role of volunteers and help in crowd management.
"The engineering and management colleges themselves volunteered to send students. Where will they get such exposure of volunteering in a rally to be addressed by the PM. We will issue them certificates,'' she said. "We want shraddhalus (devotees). Only those interested in serving will turn up. If they don't, there's little we can do,'' she added saying that she has no idea whether such an order was ever being issued in the past.
Additional Director (higher education) Dr R S Varma said the NCC and NSS enrolled students from government-run and aided colleges will be asked to become volunteers.
He said that he will ensure the presence of 400 students at the venue. "The remaining students will be asked to be ready at 7 am at their respective colleges. Their participation will depend on the availability of vehicles,'' he said.
K K Mishra, the Congress spokesperson said he never witnessed such an order in the past and it was an indication of Modi's declining popularity.
Countering the Congress charge BJP spokesperson Dr Hitesh Bajpai said, "Modiji is very popular among youngsters. The participation of students is likely to be very high and volunteers will be needed to attend to them. NCC and NSS volunteers will be very keen to do the duty.''
