IIT-Dharwad to start functioning from July: Three new courses to be introduced

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad, will begin its academic functions from the month of July. There are plans of introducing three new courses - Computer Science, Mechanical and Electronics initially. According to the Indian Express, the academic activities will commence on the transit campus at the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI), till permanent infrastructure is constructed.
The Dharwad district administration has been asked to provide three laboratories for chemistry, physics and computer science. IIT-Bombay has been asked to mentor IIT-Dharwad. A five-member technical team from the IIT-Bombay, which was headed by professor Shivaprasad, visited the campus and organised a meeting with District Minister Vinay Kulkarni, MLA Arvind Bellad, Deputy Commissioner Rajendra Cholan and others.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed with the State government seeking facilities at WALMI for the next five years.Prof Narayan Punekar, dean, academics, IIT-Bombay, said the Joint Entrance Examination results will be announced on June 10. Later on, an official announcement would be made regarding the number of seats available in different IITs.The classes for first-year BTech at IIT, Dharwad, will begin from July, with forty students admitted to each course.
A total of 120 students would be accommodated in the electrical, mechanical and computer science courses, which will start the IIT Dhanbad academic calendar. Narayan Punekar, dean academics of IIT-Bombay said that the first floor of WALMI building will be kept vacant for IIT, and the WALMI office will be shifted to the second floor.
