Student suicides shake up officials

As the board results of various central and state boards are being declared, what would soon be hitting us are suicide reports. Letters left by students who committed suicides in Kota have shaken up numerous officials and experts, forcing them to think of preventive steps by addressing the root causes of student suicides.
The middle-class Engineering Obsession:
The national obsession of parents to thrust the engineering stream upon their children is one of the main causes of the consequent depression, anxiety and stress which lead to student suicides. While engineering prospects have gone down severely in the past decade or so, middle class parents are mostly unaware of this fact, as about the various other courses and career options that have come up in the same time frame.

"Pushing students into careers that they are not interested in only results in unhappy adults just going through the motions. I believe that students pursue careers that suit their aptitude and ability. Parents should support children in their choices," said Geeta Pillai, the principal of Pune's Indira National School, speaking on how there are numerous career options available in various fields, unlike in the past when unconventional opportunities were limited.
With half of India's 1.25 billion-strong population under the age of 25, the country has an unrivalled youth demographic. Colleges in India churn out around 1.5 million 'engineers' every year, but there are not enough jobs to support them and a large chunk of the country's engineers take up menial jobs, including those of drivers or peons.
Coaching classes: Time subtracted, stress added
Moreover, coaching classes, which have become almost a mandatory feature in the lives of students act as an added pressure.
"Despite the child getting good marks in science subjects, parents think they can make him/her study more by sending the child to better coaching classes. What they fail to realize is that the child will not only be stressed out, but also battle anxiety issues. If the student is unable to cope with the pressure, he/she will end up with low self-esteem, which is dangerous," said Yajyoti Singh, a child psychologist and a counsellor at Bishop's School in Pune, according to a TOI report.
Web portal and helpline to guide students:
To address this issue of choosing the right courses according to the students' personality and aspirations, the Maharashtra education department, in collaboration with Shyamchi Aai Foundation have come up with a web portal Mahacareermitra.in along with a helpline
"The helpline (8275100001) was started on May 3," said Deepali Divekar, who is a counsellor at Mumbai's state-run Institute of Vocational Guidance and Selection. "We are getting about 100 calls every day and expect the calls to increase manifold," she added
The toll-free helpline number can be availed by students all over the state of Maharashtra to clarify issues on the regular subjects as well as receive guidance on alternative careers and vocational courses
"The website mahacareermitra.in has all the authentic coursewise, fieldwise and areawise data of colleges and courses," said Divekar
In order to make students more aware on where their skills and talents lay, the state has also conducted an aptitude test for all the students of class 10.

Smriti Irani goes live on Facebook: 10 things the Minister stated on Board Results, NEET issue and other problems

In a live Facebook interaction today, on May 17, HRD Minister Smriti Irani talked about the new education policy, delay of state results and other related educational problems plaguing in this country. Here is the minister's reaction on some recent educational issues in India.
On delay of board results:
Irani said, "Last October 2015, under the chairmanship of Secretary School Education, we held a meeting with all the state board and decision was taken that all results across the country will surely be declared by May 31st. Since education is in the concurrent list, we at the Center have to respect the right of state government to engage with students through their board at their administrative convenience." Regarding delay of CBSE results, she said that the results will be out on time.
On 'One' education policy all over India:
The HRD Minister said, "In a nation wherein education is not only in the concurrent list but also needs to cater to the students with different linguistic abilities, diversity in academics is celebrated."
Quality education is falling in engineering colleges:
Irani said, "We have now allowed engineering institutions to start skill-based education in second shift using the same infrastructure. AICTE is also appealing institutions to update their syllabus so that students can benefit from new knowledge and become industry compliant. Through GIAN we have helped state institutions to help gain access to foreign academicians who come and teach and infuse world class knowledge."
Free CBSE and NCERT books:
She said, "NCERT books in English, Hindi and Urdu from classes 1 to 12 are available free on e-Pathshala. CBSE schools have been issued circulars wherein students cannot be compelled by books outside the syllabus from a particular shop that school seeks to engage."
Teacher recruitment:
The Minister said, "Teacher recruitment and transfer are decisions falling within the ambit of the state government. However, I can say here that education is not for profit sector, hence anybody seeking to profiteer or any level of harassment should immediately be brought to the notice of the concerned state authority."
NEET controversy:
She said, "NEET is within the jurisdiction of Health Ministry not HRD."

National Law University Assam students protest against authorities'

Students at National Law University and Judicial Academy (NLUJA), Assam have been protesting and holding a strike since Monday, as the facilities which they were promised in lieu of high fees charged, have not been provided to them. An indefinite strike has been called and the classes have also been suspended.
What lead to the strike?
According to livelaw reports, students started protesting only after the authorities gave a neglected response to the students, despite a peaceful appeal made by them. The students have also requested for the construction of permanent campus at Amingaon. But, till now, there have been no reports of the request getting fulfilled.
Amount charged:

The students have alleged that Rs 2, 14,000 have been charged for the first year and thereon Rs 1, 76,000 per annum. In return, they were promised certain services which have not yet been provided and are mostly non-existent. Also, the students have requested that a refund made/ fee be adjusted, but to not be availed. Moreover, the authorities who have delayed the process for more than three years laying out different reasons, and disheartening the students.
Later on, when the concerned administrative bodies held a discussion regarding the same, the students were not permitted to present their case before them though the university authorities gave them an assurance to discuss. In order to control the chaotic situation, the police and paramilitary forces were called on the campus, but this further annoyed the students.
Also, in the year 2014, over 200 students protested against the poor facilities provided by the university and submitted a 12 page memorandum titled "A Saga of the Grieved Souls".

NITI Aayog suggests use of private bodies to carry out accreditation of Indian institutes


The think tank of the government, National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog suggested the use of private bodies to accredit higher education institutions in India in order to clear the current backlog.

The idea was proposed in a meeting with the Prime Minister.
Currently, in India, even internationally reputed Indian institutions are not permitted to accredit Indian courses.
What officials have to say:
"It would require nine years to clear the backlog at this rate. Similarly, in technical education, only 1,000 programmes out of 12,000 programmes are accredited."
"If international bodies are allowed to conduct accreditation, the cost of accreditation will go up enormously since the foreign bodies would take much more resources to come into India and operate. This could then reflect in their fee structure," reported Hindustan Times.
Moreover, India is a signatory to the Washington accord that lays down standards and authorises only one agency in the country to carry out accreditation. Hence, the process of getting private players for accreditation may be quite tedious.
What does Accreditation mean?
Accreditation is a process by which the outcomes of the learning process are evaluated by a team of experts
It examines and certifies standards maintained in higher education using an outcome based approach
It acts as a guide in making choice of institutions based on assured quality
It helps institutions and academic administrators to focus on quality improvement in terms of both teaching and learning

Dabi's score of 52 percent reflects the strict pattern of civil services exam
















Tina Dabi, who topped the civil services exam this year, had scored just over 52 percent marks in the UPSC-conducted esteemed examination to choose the top-most bureaucrats of the country.

Her score reflected the strict measures that the  Union Public Service Commission undertakes to ensure that the competitive exam is conducted in the most fair manner. Civil Services Exam decoded:

The exam is conducted annually and typically, a candidate has to clear three stages, namely, preliminary, main and interview, to get selected for various services such as Indian Administrative Service ( IAS ), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others
Marks secured by the top 3 rank holders:

Tina Dabi, who graduated from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi, clinched the top slot in the 2015 civil services exam by obtaining 1,063 marks (52.49 percent) out of a total of 2,025--comprising 1,750 secured in main and 275 from the interview, according to PTI.

Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan secured the second rank by securing 1,018 marks (50.27 percent). He hails from Jammu and Kashmir and was an Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer.

Jasmeet Singh Sandhu bagged the third spot by securing 1,014 marks (50.07 percent) and was an Indian Revenue Service (customs and Central Excise) officer.

Both Khan and Sandhu were undergoing training before making it to the top.

Total candidates recommended for appointment:

1078 candidates, including 499 in General category, 314 belonging to Other Backward Class, 176 from Scheduled Castes and 89 from Scheduled Tribes, have been recommended for appointment to various central government services on the basis of civil services 2015 examination results declared on May 6.

Waiting list:

There are 172 candidates on the waiting list, released by UPSC. Of these, the one with the lowest marks is Shish Ram. He has secured a total of 697 marks, or 34.41 percent.

"The marks reflect the strict pattern maintained by UPSC while selecting country's top bureaucrat," said a senior official in the Department of Personnel and Training, which acts as nodal authority for the UPSC.

The marksheets of both successful and unsuccessful candidates has been uploaded by the UPSC on its official website, www.upsc.gov.in. The list will be available on the website till July 13.

Gujarat Board Class 12 (Science) Exam 2016

The board results of the Class 12 (Science) stream examination are expected to be declared tomorrow, May 17 on the official website, the link for which is, http://www.gseb.org/

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) conducted the examination of Class 12 in the March, 2016.
 
According to reports, out of total 7, 93,684 lakh Class 12, around 1.35 lakh students had appeared for Class 12 science examination.

As per media reports, GSHSEB chairman A J Shah said, "These two results have been decided but the date for Class 12 general stream is not yet finalised."

In 2015, the Class 12 board results were announced on May 28, while general stream results were declared on May 30.

In order to check the results, all the candidates are requested to visit the official website and click on the relevant link. After the new window open up, the student should fill in all the required information in the space provided. After the results get displayed, candidates should take print out of the same.

The GSEB board was formed on May 1, 1960. There are many private and government schools are affiliated under this board. The main aim of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board is to provide quality education to all students.

Karnataka SSLC Class 10 Results delayed: Anxious students






Students are eagerly waiting for the Karnataka SSLC result, as the board was supposed to declare the result by today, May 13, on the official website, http://kseeb.kar.nic.in/.
Every year, over 8.50 lakh students appear for this examination, and students, who fail in the exam, can appear for the supplementary exam in the month of June. About 1.50 lakh students have appeared for the supplementary exam.

Maharashtra Government to settle school fee row in panel


As specified under Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Regulation of Collection of fee Act 2011), the state government has regulated panels in each state division.  Parents and school authorities can now approach these fee panels in case of fee hike of 15 percent.

The order to hike fees by 15 percent in schools was passed by the interim Bombay High Court on December 22, 2015. However, when parents can actually approach the panel regarding the hike is not decided yet.
The five member panel was headed by:

Retired district court judge Krishnaprasad Warrior
Chartered Accountant Santosh Parab
Retired director of Education Mohan Awate
Divisional Chairperson of Maharashtra state education board Duttatray Jagtap
Deputy Director of Education (Mumbai) BB Chavan

Procedure that the panel involves

Inform High Court about the dispute
Submit proposed fee by school authorities for the new academic year to the PTA for approval
Parents and school can approach the revision committee if they want to appeal against the decision of the divisional pane.
Jayant Jain (president of forum for Fairness in Education) said:

"We are getting complaints from parents almost every day about schools indulging in unjustified fee hikes. More than 20 complaints are pending with the education department as the fee act is not being implemented." as reported by Hindustan Times .

Visually impaired Pranjal Patil cracks IAS in first attempt



Pranjal Patil, the visually impaired girl from Ulhasnagar cracked IAS exam this year with a rank of 773. The Ulhasnagar girl lost her vision completely when she was just six , but she still prepared her mind to become an IAS officer at her childhood.

Know how she cracked the IAS exam:

Patil told the DNA about her exam preparation, "I love to read and the entire process of academics excites me. I studied on my own and took test series from ALS academy in Delhi."

It is not easy to crack the IAS in the first attempt, but Patil did it. "There were times when I was marred with doubts and disbelief regarding my ambition that. I think that when you have doubts, then only you get motivated." she added.

Know her education qualification:

Patil did her graduation in Political Science from Mumbai's St. Xavier's College and Master of Arts in International relations from Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). "In my education technology played an important role. I got this software installed on my computer which would read out chapters from various books for me," she said.

Regarding her posting, the Ulhasnagar girl said, "I do not know what they (UPSC) will give me. But whatever it is I am up for the challenge."

AP to take help of 'Summer Fellows' to improve education



In a bid to improve education quality in the state, the Andhra Pradesh (AP) government has sought help of 18 highly qualified students from reputed universities in India and across the globe.

What would the 'Summer Fellows' do?

These selected youngsters would be 'Summer Fellows' of the AP government who would study and assimilate best of global practices in higher education to come up with practically feasible programmes to help improve the quality of state universities.
Students from esteemed institutes like IITs, BITS-Pilani, Columbia University, ISB, National University of Singapore, St. Stephen's and others from both under-graduate, post-graduate courses and those conducting research will work for the AP government for the next couple of months, starting early next week.
They will look around the public universities and while looking into the current scenario will come up with plans to improve the standard of the universities along with scaling up of skills, initiating entrepreneurial abilities, enhancing research outputs etc.
What is the plan of AP govt?

The AP government wants to eventually transform the state into a 'knowledge hub' for creating a pool of human talent so that it helps improve higher education, making it relevant to the modern requirements.
 
How did this idea germinate?

The government took the idea from the Economic Development Board of the Finance Department, which had successfully conducted the summer fellowship programme last year.
How were the 'Summer Fellows' chosen?

Over 300 applications were received by the state government for higher education. The applicants included working professionals. Initially, 90 people were shortlisted on the basis of their essays about their vision on how to go about doing things in their preferred area of work.

After going through the CVs of the shortlisted candidates, 45 were interviewed via Skype and, finally, 18 were selected.

Allahabad University to hold entrance exam (2016-2017) both online and offline


At an emergency meeting held in Allahabad University on May 11, a decision was taken on holding the entrance exams in the university in both online and offline modes. This will be applicable for admissions in 2016-2017.
More on the entrance examination (AU):
  • The union ministry of human resource development stated that it received a letter from the Allahabad University that said it had no objection to the offline option for the exams
  • The process for admission shall only be online from 2017-2018
  • The undergraduate courses will have their entrances as per the announced schedule, i.e. on May 25, 2016 and May 26, 2016
  • Dates for post graduate entrances will be announced later
The controversy:
  • The Allahabad University vice-chancellor, RL Hangloo had threatened to quit along with stating that there was immense political interference in the administrative machinery of AU
  • He sarcastically also proposed for MPs and MLAs to take over as the V-C
  • Hangloo was rather disappointed with the working of administration in AU and said that he would rather return to his parent institute (Hyderabad University). He termed politics as the main hurdle
  • On Wednesday, May 11, Smriti Irani, in a political discourse with Samajwadi Party's MP in the Rajya Sabha accused the party of unnecessary intervention in the administrative issues
  • According to Irani, the HRD ministry received a letter of threat from the university

Universal Group of Institutions announces scholarship programme



The Universal Group Of Institutions, affiliated with Punjab Technical University, announced a scholarship programme named after Sangram Singh. The scholarship will be awarded every year to 50 deserving students of the university.

Singh is known for his charity and social causes. He has created awareness about animal welfare and adopted a school in Satara.

In an exclusive interview with Smarica Pant from India Today Education, Sangram Singh talks about the scholarship program and the condition of sports in our country. 

How will the scholarship named after you, help students?

Sangram Singh: The scholarship will be given to 50 meritorious students of the institution and it will help them to enrich in both sports and education.

Apart from the scholarship program, how would you like to help the poor students of this country?

SS: I always want to be the medium of poor students so that the students can enrich themselves in their desired field and last year, I also helped the poor students of a school near Lonawala. The youth is the power of the country and to construct a good nation, poor students needs to be helped.

In India, Cricket gets prime importance in the field of sports. According to you, which other sports has the capability to climb high in this country?

SS: It is true that Cricket has been given prime importance in the country but to me, wrestling is in number two and I am organising shows to boost the other sports as well.

Physical education and fitness is not given much importance in most Indian schools. How important is PE in schools? How do you think this situation can be changed?

SS: Physical Education is important for the development of body and mind, it is wrong if the schools are excluding that from their syllabus. It said that a sound body begets a sound mind and the development of a person is quite impossible without proper health.

If a student wants to choose between academic education and a particular sport, which would you advice him to choose?
SS: Which field they choose is up to the students as they have the opportunity to succeed in either of the streams. However, education is necessary for every person and without that, it is hard to reach the zenith of success.

Fee hike row: Noida DM urges CBSE to intervene



Following in the footsteps of Delhi government, the Noida district administration has taken serious note of allegations levied by the parents of school-going children regarding arbitrary increase of fees by some schools in the city.

Steps taken by the administration:

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been asked to intervene in the matter
The setting up of a committee has been suggested in order to look into the allegations
An audit of the schools being named was asked to be conducted
A fee regulatory commission was also asked to be formed, so that the transparency regarding the same is maintained
To look into the demands of the parents, the district magistrate had even formed a five member committee, which is headed by the city Magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar.
In its letter to CBSE, the following findings of the committee have been mentioned:
"During fact finding, it was found that certain schools indulged in very high and unwarranted hike of fee last year," the letter read, according to TOI
It further stated that the schools were charging money on different accounts including annual charge, development fee, scholarship fund, etc, apart from the fee according to the state government's standards
It also questioned the developmental fund being charged and said that it did not seem justified and said the parents are not being informed the basis on which the same was being charged.
Commenting further on the issue, the letter stated that charging the same amount as development fund from all the students but providing facilities to a selected few was not justified
The letter also highlighted the blind eye the schools have turned towards the provisions for EWS category under the Right To Education Act, 2009
"There is a provision to reserve 25 percent seats under EWS category. But, majority of the schools are showing neglect towards this provision. On enquiring about this, the schools merely said that despite their best efforts, they could not find adequate number of students in relation to the seats. However, they did not provide any proof for the said attempts being made," the letter said
Further, according to the rules, at least 10 percent of seats have to be reserved for bright students of the scheduled caste and tribes and the fee charged to them should not be more than what is decided for them by the Uttar Pradesh Education Board. However, most of the schools were happily violating this rule.
On the issue of books and uniforms being sold in the school premises, the DM suggested the following:
NCERT should ensure that before a session commences, they have enough printed books and students do not face a shortage of the same
Standard norms should also be in place for selling uniforms.

Now students will have a say in teacher evaluations

Thanks to the fundamental changes brought in the API by Smriti Irani led HRD ministry, in a first, college students will have a say in evaluation of teachers.

The HRD ministry has brought major changes in the way the performance of those in the teaching profession is assessed.

Changes made:

According to PTI, the procedure of changing the extant criteria of Academic Performance Indicators (API) scores, which heavily depended on co-curricular activities and research in the evaluation of teachers, has been initiated and a notification will be issued soon, officials said
"As per the new norms, students who have an attendance of 75 percent, will be able to give feedback of their teachers. The predominant weightage in evaluating teachers has been given to their teaching, learning and evaluating capacity," a senior HRD ministry official said
Reasons for changing the API criteria:

Under the previous criteria of API scores, a 30 percent weightage was given to co-curricular activities and another 30 percent to research, the official said.
Various teachers' bodies have agitated against the API system introduced in 2010, since they believed it was not fair.
"The result of making research an essential component on the basis of which a teacher would be assessed and promoted, was that a lot of substandard in not very significant journals took place. Moreover teachers who focused more on teaching than say on extracurricular activities like refereeing a basketball match sometimes found themselves at a disadvantage," another HRD official said.
Also various colleges, including many in rural areas, lack the adequate support for research, officials said.
What's new?
The rigidity of the previous system has been reduced
Now, it has been decided that co-curricular activities and research would be measured separately as well as together and there will be no capping in research
Accomplishments like presentation of paper on various subjects will now also fetch weightage
"The main focus of the changes that we are bringing in this criteria is that a teacher's performance should be linked with-- how well does he teach," a senior HRD official said.

Jawaharlal Nehru's name may comeback in Rajasthan textbook



Amidst the reports on the removal of the first Prime Minister of India-- Jawaharlal Nehru's name from the Rajasthan textbook, the issue was lifted in Rajya Sabha by Congress member Rajeev Shukla on Tuesday, May 10.
The Congress member inculpated BJP of recreating India's history by removing the names of Congress icons from textbooks and adding the new names of the various schemes.
"When we were in power, we did not change the schemes named after Deen Dayal Upadhyaya. The Civil Aviation minister is here. I would like him to clarify whether there is a proposal for pilots to announce just the name of the city at the time of landing and not the airport to avoid perpetuating the names of our leaders in collective memory," he said, according to a report in The Indian Express.

On Monday, May 9, an open letter was sent to the Education Minister Vasudev Devnani about the correction of these changes. 
"You promote your icons, but let ours be. You can't stop children from accessing information in this age. If you erase it from textbooks, they will find out from the internet. You are only vitiating the education environment," Shukla included.
What does Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi say?
"The issue raised by him (Shukla) is serious. But let me assure that no names (of leaders) are being erased or hidden. In fact, we are only adding names of those icons sidelined by your government in the past."

KV students to learn new subject compassion towards animals

In order to inculcate compassion in children towards animals Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country will now be including "Compassionate Citizen" as part of their curriculum.
What is Compassionate Citizen?
  • Compassionate Citizen is a humane education programme that has been designed specifically to teach children to be kind to animals.
  • The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan on Tuesday, May 10, issued a notification to all its schools, asking them to integrate the programme, into the official curriculum via languages, science, social studies, environmental, and value education curricula.
  • The course has been prepared by animal rights advocacy group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
  • The course has been designed to teach 8 to 12-year-old children to be kind to animals and has been endorsed by the Animal Welfare Board of India and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Important points of the notification:
  • "The programme offers tools and lesson plans to teach children to view animals as feeling, sensitive beings. It consists of a teacher's guide, reproducible activity sheets, a reading unit and a 28-minute video - all devised to help students use their reading and reasoning skills to examine the complex lives of animals, how our relationship with them has changed over time and how to respond when animals are in trouble," an official statement said.
  • "The programme has to be included in the monthly curriculum as an extra-curricular day activity or a one-day workshop. The course has been divided into four different sections -- The amazing world of animals, Animals and their feelings, Changing time and changing minds and Making humane choices," it added.
The notification came after a meeting between representatives from PETA and KVS officials.
"PETA has distributed the educational resource materials in English and Hindi to all Kendriya Vidyalaya schools. The programme is available in English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Malayalam and Telugu and can be made available in other languages, if needed," Poorva Joshipura, PETA India CEO,said.

NEET in regional languages? Maharashta govt to file review petition

On the basis of Supreme Court's judgement to make National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) compulsory for all medical aspirants, the Maharashtra education department is planning to file a review petition in the court to make NEET available in regional languages other than English or Hindi.


Why the call for different languages?
According to officials of the state education department,  though the state education department has not taken any decisions regarding the SC verdict, they want the examination to be offered in regional languages. 
"Many students have told us about their fear of having to take the exam in English or Hindi. In MH-CET, they could take the exam in Marathi as well. We are putting together a petition requesting the SC to make the NEET exam available in other vernacular languages as well," said a senior official from the state education department.
Change jolts students:
The order of the Apex Court raised confusion among the students as the student of CHM College.Nuhi Yasin Jalal told HT, "We have been preparing for CET the entire year and this sudden change will be very difficult for the HSC students. How does the court expect us to study two years' worth of CBSE syllabus in two months? This judgment has been unfair."
Sanket Pawar, a student from SK Somaiya College said, "Had they taken a decision on this at least a year in advance, we wouldn't have complained. There are many students who have taken a year out from academics only to reappear for CET, what about them?" 
Co-ordinator of the Parents' Association of Medical Students, Maharashtra, Rajesh Jain said, "We welcome NEET but the plea was that students, who have studied the state board syllabus for the entire year, get some exemption. Till the judgment was released on Monday, students were quite hopeful. They are now dejected."

Delhi Public School Ragging Case: Police calls it scuffle, parents call it ragging

Two class 11 students of Delhi Public School, Noida, were ragged and injured inside the school premise on Tuesday, May 10. Yashpratap Singh and Dhruv, who have recently joined the school, are from Bulandshahar and Kolkata, respectively. They were beaten so badly that they were later taken to the Kailash Hospital with injuries. An FIR has been registered against six identified and 12 unidentified class 12 students from the school.

What are the doctors saying?
"The boys had blunt injury marks on their upper arm, shoulders, knees and legs, which could have been inflicted by sticks or rods. However, there were no major injuries. They have been discharged," said a doctor to the Indian Express
According to a report published in the HT, Dr Sarika Chandra said, "Both the students had injuries. They were discharged after medical check-up and primary treatment as their condition is stable and out of danger."
What are the police saying?

Police have inferred that the incident took place on Monday night, when the boys were returning to their hostel rooms after dinner. However, no case of ragging has been registered. "Based on the complaint filed by the student and his family, we have filed an FIR under IPC sections relating to a scuffle," said a senior officer
Police are waiting for the counsellors of Childline India Foundation, a welfare committee, to question the accused, the news reports mention. 
How did the incident take place?

"On May 5, a group of seniors had bullied him. They asked him to imitate animals and stand in various postures. His blood pressure shot up and his heart started to beat fast. He was admitted to Max Hospital in Noida after initial treatment at school health centre. He came back to the hostel only on Sunday," said Arjun Singh, father of Yashpratap
On Monday night, Singh said his son were on the way to his room when a group of 15 students roughed up the boy. He added, "Another Class 11 student, Dhruv, tried to intervene but he also got beaten up. Yashpratap called his mother and told her about the incident. We rushed to the school but could not find him. The hostel warden refused to tell us where he was. Later, a security guard told us that an ambulance from Kailash Hospital had come to take two students. I figured my son was one of them."
What does the school say?

The school administration refused to comment on the matter, "As the working hours are over, we cannot comment on the issue," said a school spokesperson.

What do the parents say?

The school administration was trying to hush the matter and did not want to take any action against the accused, said the father of the victim
 "We hail from Bulandshahar. My son is a new entrant in the school. I am really disappointed with the behaviour of the school administration. I hope they will rusticate the students involved in the incident," said his father.

Indian companies changing appraisal system to retain right talent: PwC study


With the aim to attract, retain and reward the right talent, most companies in India are reworking on their appraisal system, or the performance management system, a survey revealed.
What changes are companies making?
52 percent of the respondents have either made or are planning to make changes in their staff appraisal systems in the near future to tackle the additional challenges caused by a growing young workforce, technological advances, a multi-generational workforce and a growing economy
Close to 20 percent had done away with individual ratings. The idea behind the move was to make systemic changes, which indicated that bold approaches to performance evaluation and management would be seen in the near future
The Performance Management Trends Survey, conducted by PwC India in 2015, was the primary source of the studyâ??s findings and analysis.
Why is a change in the system important?
"We are at the point of inflection that requires organisations to not just cut cost, but transform the way performance is driven and measured. Current systems are focused on shareholders. However, in todayâ??s scenario, employees are key stakeholders of the business," PwC India Leader  People and Organisation, Padmaja Alaganandan, said, according to PTI

What do employees feel about the appraisal system change?

Only 12 percent of the respondents believed that their current performance management system was highly effective in achieving its stated purpose
They feel that while there is considerable use of performance systems in recognition of individual contribution, they are not as frequently utilised in the recognition of team contribution
"With collaboration being the cornerstone of workplaces today, it is worth exploring why organisations are not reflecting this reality by giving due weightage to team contribution in performance evaluation," it suggested
93 percent of the respondents felt that the primary purpose of the entire exercise was supporting business objectives
A key contributor to employee dissatisfaction and their perceived mismatch of expectations was the fact that little or no focus was given on employee outcome such as promoting team work and driving organisational culture

AP SSC results declared: Girls outperform boys


The Andhra Pradesh has declared the results of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination on the official website, the link for which is http://bseap.org/
This year, the state has witnessed girls outperform boys in the exam. The pass percentage of girls is 94.77 and 94.30 for boys. "Overall, there is an improvement of about 3 per cent over the previous year," said HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, according to a report in The Hindu.
The board has published the date sheet of supplementary exams. The exams will take place from June 16 and will conclude on June 29.

ICSE, ISC 2016 results declared: Check the percentage of toppers here!


In the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and Indian School Certificate (ISC) results, which were announced on Friday, May 6, students from Mumbai and Odisha topped the charts.
Class 12:
With 99.75 percent, Aadyaa Maddi of Lilavatibai Podar School topped the ISC or class 12 exams.
The second position was also bagged by Mumbai's Mansi Puggal with 99.50 percent while the third position was shared by Arkadeb Sengupta and Kavita Desai from Kolkata who scored 99.25 percent.
Class 10:
Abineet Parichha from Odisha, who scored 99.2 percent, topped the ICSE or class 10 exams.
The second position has been shared by four students- Sudarshan R (Bangalore), Isha Sethi (Mumbai), Manan Manish Shah (Kandivali) and Jyotsana Srivastava (Lucknow) who scored 99 percent. The third position has been shared by 10 students with a score of 98.8 percent.
The results were declared at 3 pm on the official website of the Board, which is cisce.org.
The pass percentage for ICSE increased marginally by 0.01 percent and for ISC it rose by 0.18 percent as compared to last year nationally. Southern region had the best performance across the country.
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) saw girls outshining boys in both the classes.
Why were the results declared two weeks earlier?
The Live Ink Character Recognition (LICR) technology helped the board in declaring the results earlier.

What is LICR?
"LICR captures and digitises the marks entered on the top-sheets of the answer scripts, and instantly encrypts and transfers the captured data to the Council's cloud-based servers directly from the evaluation centers," Arathoon said, according to PTI.
"This significantly reduced the time required for compilation of results as the system automatically totals the marks awarded by the examiners and also applies the question-paper rubrics, hence eliminating any possibility of manual totalling and manual rubric application errors," he added.
The examination mark sheets and pass certificates for class 10 and 12 will reach the schools by May 14 and May 10 respectively, the council announced.

SC bars students who appeared in NEET-I to re-appear in NEET-II

The Solicitor General said that the Centre would be convening a meeting of all the stakeholders in a day or two on issues related to NEET and would apprise the court about the outcome on May 9.
Earlier, the apex court had said that unaided private medical colleges across the country cannot be permitted to go ahead with their pre-scheduled tests for admissions to MBBS and BDS courses.
The apex court had earlier commenced the crucial hearing on the pleas of state governments, private medical colleges, and minority institutions like CMC Vellore and Ludhiana seeking nod to hold pre-scheduled separate entrance exams for MBBS and BDS courses.

Stand of States in this matter:

The states, opposing NEET, alleged that there are marked differences in the syllabus for the state entrance tests and the NEET.
In its bid to provide equal opportunities to all, the Supreme Court on Friday, May 6 clarified that the students, who appeared in National Eligibility Entrance Test-I (NEET) on May 1 for admissions in MBBS and BDS courses, cannot be permitted to re-appear in NEET-II, scheduled to be held on July 24.
SC's Verdict:

"Those students who had appeared in the NEET Phase-I shall not be permitted to appear at NEET Phase-II but the students who could not appear in NEET Phase-I may appear in NEET Phase-II," a bench of Justices A R Dave, Shiva Kirti Singh and Adarsh Kumar Goel told the PTI.

On state exams:
  • Changing its stand on the subject, the bench hinted that it may consider allowing states to conduct their own tests to continue with the admission process for current academic year alone
  • However, it deferred the decision on this aspect till May 9 when Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar who is scheduled to apprise them about the stand of the Centre
  • "The issue with regard to those students who had appeared or who are due to appear in examinations conducted by the States in accordance with their State laws, shall be decided after hearing the Solicitor General," the court said
  • "In view of the request made by the Solicitor General, hearing is adjourned to May 9, 2016," the bench said.
What does the interim order say?

The court restated its earlier view on private colleges holding their separate entrance tests saying "it is clarified that no examination shall be permitted to be held for admission to MBBS or BDS studies by any private college or association or any private/deemed university."

Medical Council of India's (MCI) take on the matter:

During the brief hearing, the MCI, which had earlier opposed the plea of some states, has said that they should be allowed to continue with their entrance tests, however, told the court that they can be permitted "only for this year".
