Educational institutes in the Capital, showing the green energy path: Dyal Singh College saves electricity.

Dyal Singh College of DU set-up solar power panels on the campus, thus being the first college to make this move in electricity production. The college will reportedly save up to 30 percent on power bills.
The Power major BSES announced on April 28 that its 'net-metering' initiative in order to produce solar energy was being received very well in the capital city. Educational institutes in the Capital are right on track in showing the green energy path to the rest of the country.
initiativefor the 'net metering'?
Net metering involves setting up solar panels on the rooftops to generate electricity. The electricity produced is consumed by the generator and the surplus is sold to power suppliers at rates agreed upon by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).This method allows one to keep a track of how much energy is produced and,how much is consumed
How many people are using this feature in Capital?
The Capital has 113 such projects going on, producing a total of 4,600 KW of energy,Net metering connections are being mostly used by the domestic category.
Educational colleges / Institutes have the largest net metering load
“Apart from this, over 20 solar net metering projects with a cumulative sanctioned load of over 800 KW are under various stages of commissioning at the consumers' end, ‘said a BSES spokesperson,  “As many as 26 schools and educational institutes have opted for it,”added the official. In the BSES areas, the potential for rooftop solar energy is in excess of 250-300 MW
How is Dyal Singh College using net metering with respect to solar power?
The college, which has a requirement of around 200 kilowatts, has installed solar power panels for the production of 100 kilowatts in the first phase
The solar panel installations on the college rooftops were carried out with the help of Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and Ministry of New and Renewable Resources (MNRE)
"We plan to make our campus environment friendly and this was the first step towards that," said college principal IS Bakshi, according to an HT report
"According to SECI, ours is the first college in DU to install solar panels," added the principal
Dyal Singh College plans on selling the surplus electricity produced during vacations, lean days and holidays to BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL). Selling the surplus power will help the college recover its solar panel installation cost within three years
"We spent 62 lakh in installing the solar panels. We are estimating that in three years we will be able to recover this amount by selling surplus electricity," said the principal.
Other green measures by Dyal Singh College:
An affluent treatment plant will soon be installed by the college in order to treat
the chemical waste from its labs before it is released into water channels
"Till now chemical waste produced from science labs was released in water channels polluting the system. We are starting work on the affluent treatment plant in one week after which the chemical waste from our 4 labs would be treated and then released," said the principal.
