Data regarding the IIM fee hike has been shared in the Lok Sabha by HRD minister Smriti Irani, according to which IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Shillong have increased their fees by 5 percent and IIM Lucknow by 29.6 per cent. Overall, seven out of the 19 Indian Institutes of Management have increased their tuition fees in the last two years. IIMs are autonomous institutions, says HRD Minister
According to newspaper reports, Irani said ''The fees in IIMs is not linked to the fees in other institutions in the country. IIMs are autonomous institutions and are governed by their respective memorandum of associations and rules of the society which include the fixing of fees and other charges as per provisions contained therein''.
Hike by different IIMs:
- IIM-Calcutta hiked its fees by 17.3 percent
- IIM-Kozhikhode by 23.1 percent
- IIM-Ranchi by 19 percent
- IIM-Trichy by 20 percent
Why the fee hike is not a problem: Irani also made it clear that this increase in the fee has not adversely affected below poverty line and other lower class students since institutes extend financial assistance, including up to full tuition fee waiver and maintenance allowance, to needy students.
IIM Bill :The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has recently sent the draft of the IIM Bill to the Law ministry for screening due to the ongoing controversy of giving permission to recognised management institutes of India to give degree to students instead of post-graduate diplomas.Last month also, candidates who were enrolled in the five-year Integrated programme in Management (IPM) were waiting for the bill to get passed by the Parliament, but had to leave IIM Indore with a post graduate degree only.
