Gujarat state board curriculum revised:Class 11 Eco book to feature Gandhi

The Gujarat state board has revised its curriculum according to which, higher secondary students of schools affiliated to it will now study about Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, co- founder of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh and an RSS pracharak, as part of economics from the coming year.
According to Indian Express, a new chapter on 'economic thought' in Economics for Class 11 commerce students have been introduced, which will feature Upadhyaya along with Chanakya and Mahatma Gandhi as main economic thinkers.
Who will be studying this revised book?
This chapter will be read by students of both Gujarati and English medium private and government schools affiliated to the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB).
What changes have been included?
The chapter number 11, which consists of total 15 pages in the book, talks in depth about Pandit Deendayal's economic thoughts and also gives a description regarding his appearance and other personal attributes
One of the lines in the chapter's opening page says ''In India, there is a great influence of several economic thinkers since the monarchial regimes. Of all these, in this chapter we will introduce main economic thinkers like Kautilya (Chanakya), Gandhiji and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya."
Apart from this, a detailed description of Upadhyaya's philosophy of integral humanism has also been givenOther topics such as decentralised economy, restrained consumption and labour-intensive production methodology have also been explainedVarious schemes which have been launched by the state government based on Upadhyaya's thoughts, have also been included in the textbook
Complex process of revising a textbook: Gujarat State Board of School Textbooks chairman Nitin Pethani said, "Revising a textbook is a long-drawn process. Though we chalk out the micro-level curriculum for senior secondary subjects, it is the GSHSEB that works out the macro level, what is to be included under each chapter. Also, the subject committees and subject teachers decide and approve the content in each textbook, based on suitability and relevance. The state education department gives the final nod."
